Cabrillo College Accessibility Support Center (ASC) and Learning Skills
ASC LEARNING SKILLS COMPONENT
The Learning Skills component of the Accessibility Support Center (ASC) supports students with learning and other disabilities. Learning Disabilities Specialists provide evaluations for students to find out if they have an LD. This service is offered for students who have signs of an LD and have not been previously diagnosed so that they may qualify for accommodations and services that could benefit their learning and coursework. Specific learning disabilities can affect students' abilities to succeed in their coursework without accommodations and disability-related services such as instruction is learning skills and study strategies, academic counseling and advocacy. Learning Disabilities Specialists also help students with previously identified learning disabilities and those with mental health, developmental, or physical disabilities to develop learning skills and study strategies that may work best for them given their disabilites and academic goals.
Accessibility Support Center (ASC) SERVICES: REFERRAL AND RECORDS
Students are referred to the ASC by instructors, tutors, college staff, counselors, community agencies, fellow students, and more. Students may also refer themselves. The ASC provides services to students with all types of disabilities when they need academic accommodations and services. This can include learning disabiliites, physical health or mental health issues, developmental disabilities, ADHD, Autism, etc.
If the student has been diagnosed with a disability or has a history of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan from high school, the student can contact the ASC to get started with services. It is helpful if the student can bring a copy of their IEP or diagnosis with them, but they can also sign a Release of Information so that the ASC can request a copy of their records. If the student has not yet been diagnosed or does not know if they have a disability, an ASC faculty member will be happy to meet with them to discuss options for getting access to support and services.
