About this Handbook:

Learning Differently: Handbook for Students with Learning Disabilities at Cabrillo College was originally written by Richard Griffiths. Affectionately known as "Sir Richard Griffiths," he had a huge impact on the awareness of learning disabilities and the availability of support and resources to promote equity at Cabrillo and throughout the state of California and the nation. Richard Griffiths was one of the Founders of the California Association for Postsecondary Education and Disability (CAPED) that continues to offer the annual Dick Griffiths Memorial Scholarship Links to an external site. in his honor. His most recent edition of the Handbook, 2nd Edition, Revised, was written in 2003. Much has changed in the field since that time, so in 2024, Sheryl Kern-Jones Links to an external site., a Learning Disabilities Specialist at Cabrillo College and Northern California Co-Chair for the Learning Disabilities CAPED Interest Group, updated and expanded the Handbook creating an accessible online version available in CANVAS that is free to students.

Note: We have made every attempt to make this content accessible. If you have an feedback or concerns about this version, please talk with your instructor or any LD Specialist in the Cabrillo ASC Links to an external site.

Original Acknowledgements and Notice by Richard Griffiths:

This handbook is dedicated to the students with learning disabilities at Cabrillo College who have completed their educational and occupational goals, and whose courage I can only admire.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
I gratefully acknowledge and appreciate Jo Anna Santana-Bates for a much improved format and especially for the Seahawk; and to Steve Pluhacek and Debra Spencer for their “pernicious form of perfectionism” (proofreading assistance).
