A Word to the New Men in the Marine Cooks and Stewards Association, C.I.O.

Illustration of 3 diverse marine cooks and stewards

Overview

This pamphlet for new marine cooks and stewards describes the benefits of the union for workers and breaks down concepts such as a closed shop, rotary hiring, the ship's delegate, and the process for settling disputes. It stresses that the union members fight together and the union can force ship owners to address grievances and "settle your beef" (pg. 5).

Questions

  • How does the Marine Cooks and Stewards Association address discrimination?
  • How does Patri use the images in the pamphlet to convey solidarity across the union?  Are the illustrations effective?
