Migratory Farm Labor

Map of California counties with arrows pointing to counties containing privately or publically operated labor camps for farm workers.

Migrant farm workers move from one place to another looking for jobs harvesting seasonal crops.  Many farm workers and their families lived in labor camps run by the government or private corporations. This map indicates the locations and numbers of 2,125 public and privately operated farm labor camps in California counties in 1963. Primary sources under this topic include photographs of farm workers living and working conditions, and finding work as a temporary, migrant laborer.
