Warehouse Union Local 6

Print of a man and woman walking together with the caption "WELCOME to Warehouse Union Local 6"

This pamphlet was produced by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 6 for new members to share information about the governance and functions of the union. The pamphlet provides information on meetings, dues, and committees. The text was written by Paul Heide, Vice-President of the local, and illustrated by Giacomo Patri.

Questions

  • “Speaking of Discrimination” (pg. 5) highlights from the Preamble of the union’s constitution the need for solidarity or unity across “...craft, age, sex, nationality, race, creed, or political belief.”  How does this unity keep the union strong?
  • All full members are able to vote to elect officers, making the union democratic, or controlled by the rank and file.   What are the other duties of a union member? See "A Good Union Member" (pg. 12) for a full list.
