7.1 Generating Ideas

Why Research Topics Matter

The underlying goal of most research projects - whether academic, professional, or personal - is to solve a problem or answer a question. One of the most critical first steps in the research process, then, is to identify and define the problem or question you intend to solve. This will help to guide the rest of the steps in your research process - from your search strategies to the types of evidence and sources needed, to the overall scope of your project.

Finding Value in a Topic

The topic you choose to develop for any research project should be one that is interesting and valuable to you. If you care about your topic, you'll be more motivated to do good work. Use this opportunity to find valuable and in-depth information for your own benefit.

If your English instructor has assigned a broad topic: Are there any aspects of the topic that you are particularly interested in? Explore those further to make the topic your own.

If your English instructor has assigned a specific topic: Are there any angles or ways you can approach the topic that would still be meaningful and interesting for you?

Helpful Questions to Ask

  • Are you thinking about a particular college major? Research a current topic in your desired field, or one aspect that you would like to become more knowledgeable about.
  • Are you facing any challenges or new situations in your life? Search for information on health care, family or interpersonal issues, money, or economic challenges.
  • Do you have a lifelong interest such as history or art? Browse a subject-specific database that specializes in your interest to find the latest trends in art, or new discoveries that have changed history.
  • Is there a social or political issue that you feel strongly about? Investigate the background, different perspectives, prominent people, or court cases relating to that issue.
