Joy Buolamwini (MIT researcher, Rhodes Scholar, Fulbright Fellow, poet of code, and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League Links to an external site.) found that the algorithms powering facial recognition software systems were failing to recognize darker-skinned complexions - what she calls the "coded gaze".
