Faculty Use of TOP Codes
Program and Course Level
The TOP code was designed to aggregate information about programs. However, a TOP code must also be assigned to every course in our system. Each course should be given the TOP code that comes closest to describing the course content and objectives. TOP codes are housed in the curriculum software platform eLumen. The program TOP code usually comes from the TOP code common to most courses in the program. Note that different courses inside the program can have different TOP codes.
Where to find TOP codes.
The assignment of the TOP code at both the program and course level falls under the purview of the faculty, with directions and guidance from Deans, Planning and Research Office (PRO) and state initiatives to maintain alignment across the state. For CTE it is important to check that the TOP code is listed as a vocational TOP code. Use the Taxonomy of Programs document TOP Code Manual Links to an external site., housed at the California Community College Chancellor's office under the Curriculum and Instruction Unit Links to an external site., to search for TOP codes and their description. CTE faculty can use the asterisk, noted before the TOP code in this document, to ensure the TOP code is used for vocational programs.
Video examples of navigating the TOP Code Manual are in the next module.
