Faculty Use of SOC Codes
Requesting Labor Market Data
Career Technical Education (CTE) faculty use the SOC codes to request Labor Market Information (LMI) data*. Labor Market Information data helps ensure that there are local jobs for our students in the professions that correspond to the programs we offer. CTE programs need to be designed to be responsive to the local labor market. Intentional design of CTE programs can be made by use of LMI data and Advisory Board recommendations.
If you are planning a new program or if you are reviewing your program, a review of the most up to date SOC codes and LMI data is needed.
Where to search for SOC codes.
Finding SOC codes for your program can be done using the most current CIP SOC Crosswalk at NCES Links to an external site. or by using the O*NET Online Links to an external site. search tool. the O*Net Online site has a search function which allows for searching by key words. If you use O*Net please cross check that the SOC code is aligned with the CIP code from NCES: CIP2020 SOC2018 Crosswalk Links to an external site.
When using the O*NET search tool you may see an 8 digit code. In this code the last two digits after the decimal give even more refinement of the job type as seen at the bottom of the final column in the example below:
