Faculty use of TOP and CIP Codes

Where to find matching TOP and CIP codes.

Since the TOP code and the CIP code are both describing the academic program there is a crosswalk to align the state TOP codes with the national CIP codes. The TOP and CIP codes must be in the same row in the TOP-CIP Crosswalk. The TOP-CIP Crosswalk-June2020 Links to an external site. is also housed at the California Community College Chancellor's Office under the Curriculum and Instruction Unit Links to an external site.. Faculty navigate the appropriate TOP and CIP codes for the program and for Labor Market Information request which usually matches the program level codes. In addition, faculty decide on the appropriate TOP and CIP codes at the course level based on the course content and objectives.

Course Level CIP Codes

Currently at Cabrillo we have CIP codes requested in eLumen at the course level. The CIP codes in eLumen are not updated to the newest 2020 Crosswalk, yet. Pick the corresponding TOP code, then keep the desired CIP code in eLumen > Cover Info tab >Notes for Submission (see screenshot) and work with the CSAs to get the correct CIP code in.

Program Level CIP Codes

Historically the analysts would choose the program level TOP and CIP code by taking information from the courses in the program.  When creating new programs, connect with your division's assigned analyst to ensure the program codes are accurate.

Curriculum Creations and Revisions:

While courses and programs are being created and revised keep vigilant for eLumen notifications attend all curriculum meetings when your courses and programs are in "1st" and "2nd Read". By coordinating closely with the analysts, departments can monitor the course and program codes and even ask for desired new 2020 CIP codes that are not populating in eLumen.

Video examples for TOP/CIP Crosswalk navigation and negotiation are in the next module.
