This laboratory course is intended to familiarize you with basic laboratory techniques, encourage exploration of the process of scientific inquiry, and illustrate hands-on concepts of chemistry. These skills cannot be learned from a textbook alone, hence the reason attendance in lab is REQUIRED (students are not allowed to miss more than 3 lab experiments and still pass the class). The complete lab policies, safety guidelines and grading criteria are outline in the Syllabus.

For each experiment, students must read and understand both the background information and the experimental procedure BEFORE coming to the laboratory. Consult the schedule below for the background readings for each day of lab. To asses students' level of preparation, pre-lab quizzes will periodically be given at the beginning of the lab period. Students should expect to spend approximately 1 hour preparing for each experiment.

Before coming to lab, be sure to prepare your lab notebook following the guidelines outlined in this link. Your notebook will also be turned in after the lab practical and graded following these common practices for keeping a scientific notebook.
