Primary vs. Review Articles

The three articles below are all academic, peer reviewed articles in the sciences. 

Only one is a primary research article with original research.


1. Innate and adaptive immune responses in asthma Links to an external site.

This article provides a review of current research on the topic of asthma.

First paragraph of sample review article focused on asthma.  Provides a scientific definition of asthma.

 

2. Preterm Birth and Childhood Wheezing Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Links to an external site.

This article provides a systematic review of research the topic of pre-term birth and childhood wheezing disorders. 

It also provides a meta-analysis of the results of that research:  Meta-analyses combine the data from different studies to create a larger data set and discuss what that larger data set shows us.

Includes all six authors names and the universities or hospitals they are affiliated with, as well as a brief description of the background, methods, findings, and conclusions.

 

3. Metabolomic Associations of Asthma in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Links to an external site.

This primary research article includes original research:   A study that included 3,347 people and analyzed metabolomic associations of Asthma in diverse Latino populations. 

The article discusses the methods and results of their study.

Example of a primary research article with an original study about Latinos and asthma.  Lists all ten authors names and the universities or hospitals they are affiliated with as well as a short description of the research question and the study methods.
