Finding Sources @ the Cabrillo College Library (Week 5)

Research Continues! Get Your Research Question Ready!

On this page, you will continue the research process and find more sources that will go into your essay. As part of your research plan, aim to find at least eight to ten articles and take notes on these articles on a Google doc, index cards, Google Slides, notebook, or any other note taking method of your choice. Once you have completed your research, plan on writing SQE paragraphs on the articles you have found. Four SQE paragraphs on four sources comprise a minimum requirement for the essay. One of those sources must be the CQ Researcher article, "COVID-19 and Mental Health." Links to an external site. You will need to find at least 3 additional sources to meet the minimum requirements for the essay--you can, of course, find more!

Research can go on forever, so the trick is to find balance. What do you want to learn about? What information is provided by the articles you find? Is that enough? Do you need more? Only you can decide. So keep your research question in mind, take notes, and let's start!

Minimum requirement for Week 6: find 4 sources and write TWO SQE paragraphs

Minimum requirement for the COVID-19 & Mental Health Essay:  Four SQE paragraphs on four sources, one of which must be "COVID-19 and Mental Health" Links to an external site.

What's Missing?

You have already found information on your COVID-19 and Mental Health research topic using CQ Researcher and newspaper sources from Google News and the Library databases.  Take some time to consider what information you already have, and what information you are missing.

  • What is your focus?  What specific issue or community are you researching?
  • What kind of information have you found so far?  Do you have statistics, personal stories, professional opinions?
  • Whose experience is included and documented in the information you have found so far?  For example, if you are researching the impact of COVID-19 on black and brown communities, does the information you have found so far include the experiences, perspectives, and voices of black and brown communities?

In this second round of library research, you will look for additional sources to fill information gaps.  You can continue to work with the "COVID 19 & Mental Health Links to an external site." article and newspaper articles, or you can explore some additional sources at the Library:

At the Library

We will work with Cabrillo College librarians during our Zoom session this week on Monday for STARS and Tuesday for Puente! Prepare to ask questions and tell them about your success. What's working and what's not working as you conduct research?

CQ Researcher

All CQ Researcher articles contain numerous sources at the end of each section. In each article, they also place numbered footnotes to indicate a source. You can click on these numbers and get the publication information for the source. In addition, at the end of most sections, there is a list of articles that you can review to gather more information on your research topic.

Here is a screenshot of the footnotes at the end of the "Overview" section of the CQ Researcher article, "COVID-19 and Mental Health." Links to an external site. These footnotes appear at the end of most sections in each CQ Researcher article.
